Saturday was Summer's End. Basically, a schmooze-fest for me. I didn't make any commitments, didn't enter any contests, just talk, schmooze and feast. Tried to volunteer for kitchen clean-up, but the kitchen was overflowing with volunteers, so I left to join the dancing. Everytime I get to dance at an SCA event, I'm tempted to write my own SCA dance manual, "The Evil Dance Master's Guide to Sharking". As far as I know no one has ever written that stuff down and there's a few sharks that a friend and I developed from scratch. Home around midnight.
Sunday was the first day of services for my UU congregation. There are a few folks I hadn't seen all summer. After services, we did a quick unpacking of the car and headed out to my mothers to take her shopping and shopping and shopping. We actually had to stop back at the house and unload before going out again because there was no more room in the car for groceries. My mother is now set for a month. A few visits back, I found a shoebox full of old photos. I sorted them out and numbered them, intending to scan them in. I asked mother to identify as many as possible. She can only handle about 25 photos in a row before she gets tired, but I can work with that. One of the photos was a genealogical gold-mine. A family portrait of my great-grandparents surrounded by their children, in-laws, grand children and great-grandchildren (Yes, I'm a small child in the photo.) My mother was able to identify everyone in it. Other photos pre-date my mother's birth!
Monday is my wife's birthday and we're going out to eat to celebrate. Last year, I heard about an interesting event called the Warren Great Race. I was interested in attending it this year, however, the website continued to advertise the previous year's event. One of the organizers is a friend of mine and I asked him about it about a month ago. He said he'd have to get together with the other organizers one of these days to see if they were going to do it again. When the website still hadn't changed as of about three weeks ago, I pretty much gave up on it. This morning, he posted photos of this years event. It was the same day as Summer's End. Dang!
I'm going to be presenting a puppet play at the end of this month. It's an annual event. I've known I was going to do a play since last October. My muse didn't strike over the winter. Coming up on the event, my muse still hadn't spoken, so I figured I'd re-do a puppet play from a previous year. With less than a month to go, my muse struck with a vengence. An entirely new puppet play, an entirely new KIND of puppet play which requires not only a new script, but brand-new puppets and alterations to the stage itself. All of which, plus rehearsals, have to be done in less than three weeks. I'm starting to understand why muses are traditionally depicted as females... :D
