I have a move to finish and a dissertation on top of that, so a ficlet is the best I can do to assuage my deep longing for 7th Year Hogwarts fic featuring Neville being awesome and Minerva weathering the storm.
TITLE: Respite
AUTHOR: MC Donovan
FANDOM: Harry Potter
RATING: Gen, and nothing to warn for either.
SPOILERS: Books and the final film; this is influenced by movie canon.
CATEGORY: Neville/Luna-ish, but Minerva/Hogwarts is still my OTP.
SUMMARY: Minerva, looking for space to breathe.
The Carrows were unexpectedly called away this morning, and the castle itself seems to have let out a breath of air. Minerva smiled into her sleeve at the frightened looks they exchanged.
She hasn't prowled the halls as a cat since Dolores Umbridge arrived, but tonight she'll risk it. It's better for her health than the bottle of firewhisky she bought when Severus was appointed Headmaster.
Even her cat-self thinks the castle smells like fear and dread, with only the faintest twinge of relief in the air. She considers returning to her rooms, but then senses Longbottom. He's talking to Luna Lovegood, reaching briefly for her hand, with a smile that finally reaches his eyes. It's totally unlike the tired ones he gives the younger children when they're frightened.
Minerva turns for the kitchens. She can't end the damned war, but she can give them privacy. She transforms back and discovers she's smiling too.
