Title: Think but this, and all is mended.
Fandom: Torchwood
Rating: PG
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Disclaimer: I think the events of COE 4 are proof enough I don’t own Torchwood.
Notes: SPOILERS. LOTS OF THEM. FOR COE DAY 4. Also, living on the wrong side of the pond, I haven’t seen Day 5 yet. This would’ve been up sooner but I had work.
Summary: SPOILERS FOR CHILDREN OF EARTH DAY FOUR. SPOILERS. LOTS OF THEM.

His face is pale, his lips turning blue, and his eyes are shut.

In death, he is more peaceful than Jack’s ever seen him. He barely registers Gwen sobbing as he leans on her, as they see their dead friend for the last time.

He’ll give him a proper burial. The Hub is gone, anyway, and it seems only right. A proper burial, with a proper grave and headstone and everything, and he’ll visit. And bring flowers.

Remind him that he’ll never, ever forget.

He closes his eyes.

Gwen gasps a little.

“Jack!”

He doesn’t open his eyes. There are guards with guns standing a little ways away. He wants them to shoot.

If only it would actually work.

“Jack, look!”

Ianto’s glowing. Bright, orange tendrils of light snake out from his eyes and his mouth and his ears, and he glows, and the colour returns to his face.

His eyes open.

“Sorry about that. Haven’t quite got the hang of the whole regeneration thing.”

Jack just gapes.

--

“What-why-how did you-”

Ianto just smiles. “I’m half Time Lord on my mother’s side. I regenerate, but I don’t change faces.”

“But the Doctor-”

“I’ve met him before. After Gallifrey was lost. He wanted me to travel with him. I prefer to stay here. I like Torchwood.”

Jack doesn’t answer, instead grabbing Ianto by the shoulders and holding him tight to his chest.

“Don’t ever do that to me again,” he says, his voice breaking slightly. “Promise me you won’t ever.”

“How about I just promise to come back sooner? I think by now I’ve got it.”

Jack laughs, a strangled sound that could be a cry. Neither is sure which.

Gwen stands and walks away from the scene, giving Jack and Ianto their space as Jack pulls him in close, kissing him hard.

The world could wait.
