The Leaving Words
When you say no
with no pretence of understanding,
When you say it is so
with not a thought for anything I'm feeling,
Do you know, after you go,
I find myself crying?
I scream inside,
trying not to show
anything on the outside.
I love you and I need you to know,
but I need time to decide
how to tell you that I need to grow.
Emotional numbness grows stale.
Inside my thoughts are careening.
If I scream I'll face your cold stare,
then in your eyes I'll be drowning.
I think maybe we both should prepare
ourselves for my leaving.
