Pride & Prejudice
Hmm. It's a period piece meets romantic comedy. Either one of those individually should turn many people off, so much more so with this tag team.
This film is absolutely accessible and easily relatable, despite the language barrier. (Ye olde English.) Framed against the straightforward societal guidelines of the day, the awkward interactions between the characters reveal very human flaws that we often show despite our best efforts to present our own facade in modern interaction. It is genuinely funny and we can see that the more things change, the more they stay the same. The film is beautifully shot, and the cinematography plays a prominent role in telling the emotional journey of the characters. Thankfully it doesn't get corny or melodramatic.
Haven't read the books, and I'm not quite sure if Jane Austen was one of the authors I was assigned to--but didn't--read in high school, but I give this one a big thumbs up.
