Well, oddly enough the internet rumors were true. Sam's Club was having a midnight launch party until 2am for Rock Band. Only...it wasn't a party at all. Just 13 of us in line (including myself and two classmates), and only one person at a time allowed in store. And apparently some people were only there because just today they put up signage in the store about the event. I just don't understand the logic behind a Sam's Club midnight opening for a video game. Fortunately, the game came out to $160 after tax, which is $20 below regular price before tax!
The three of us wound up setting it up in the school's video game lounge, and we played until well after 4am. Unfortunately, we don't get to keep all that hard-earned progress through career mode. It's great fun with a group of people, but I still need to play it solo to see if it holds up at all. It seems like the name of the game is practice, practice, practice instead of shooting for a high score. Throughout your globe-hopping tour, you wind up playing songs over and over again, slowly adding new songs to your repetoire as you go on. I also think the lesson learned is that there's no money to be made in live music, as we earn $20-$40 after each song... That being said, it seemed like the clothing was realistically priced.
Be aware: We were already having technical issues with the guitar around 3:30am. It would no longer register downward strums, only upward. Even before that, I was having great difficulty in strumming in rapid succession for long series of notes. It's also a major pain in the ass to deal with the high-note solo buttons and then have to quickly shift back to the regular frets and start strumming again. I tried using my strumming hand to work them, but decided just to ignore them completely.
One thing I greatly miss from Guitar Hero is the indicators on notes involved in a hammer-on/pull-off series. It would have also been cool if they had the no-loads between songs.
I need to have a Rock Band party when any involved parties actually have time off. Maybe after the semester lets out.
