House of Flying Daggers
What a surprising turn of events! Despite what preconceptions you may have or how the production presents the story, the story turns out to be far more intimate than you may ever imagine. It starts off as your every day martial arts epic, but the major twists are enough to make you want to go back and reexamine scenes under a different light.
Pacing is rather deliberate, and I'm sure some people may get bored, especially since it turns out to have a non-action focus. Lots and lots of running/walking and riding around on horses. That is not to say that the fights presented are not spectacular. They still feature some rather super-heroic movements but they take on a more raw edge than usual.
Yes, this is the first time I've seen this movie. I'd held off on seeing it because I thought it might have been just another entry into the artsy melodramatic martial arts import genre. Alright, it is. However, it surprised me with its shift in scope and became worthwhile.
