Huh.

Earlier today, I ran into James Martens on campus. Hadn't seen him since high school, but we gave each other a nod and a "hey."

I would expect to see him on campus, even though I haven't until now. Because I know he went to UCF.

Tonight I arrived to the elevator area just as the door was closing. I figured I could afford to wait and call the other one down instead of rushing and sticking my arm out to grab the door before it closes. A blonde approaches behind. We don't make eye contact; I'm just aware that she's there. The elevator arrives, we pause, and seeing that she has yet to start moving in, I make a motion toward the elevator. She looks and smiles at me. "Do you remember me?," she eagerly asks me. At first I thought she was my classmate who sits next to me. I look closer.

"Rachel?"

(Frankly, one of my first impressions of that classmate was that she resembled Rachel.)

Our graduating year, hardly anyone decided to go to UCF. I thought I had a good grasp of what handful of people had chosen to come here. Well, of course I hadn't overlooked this one person. She'd transferred from FAU sophomore year. Okay, that mystery solved.

Another mystery is how we haven't run into each other sooner. We have class at the same time, in the same building, on the same floor. Sure the classrooms aren't on the same hallway, but what's a corner? What baffles me most is how people recognize me after all these years. My look is dramatically different than that in high school!
