Carl's Mini-Movie Review: Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
The movie definately had its moments, but I think it had entirely too many flaws. It had rather plodding pacing and poorly budgeted scenes, the whole thing coming off as episodic and inconsequential. Things just seem to happen just so there'd be somewhere to go.
I'd never read the book, so I don't know if that's the way they were there, but according to the credits, the song lyrics were written by Roald Dahl. Of course the music-magician Danny Elfman seems to have done all the various Oompa Loompa voices himself. (New Corpse Bride trailer!)
While the CG seemed middle-of the road, I have to applaud the massive amount of effort it took to film the single actor who played all the the Oompa Loompas in a convincing, non-copy-paste manner. Of course, the overall visual styling is trademark Burton, and the cinematography presenting the environments is as delicious as the candy.
It was weak. But it is a Burton/Depp film, so it should still be worth seeing for all the whacked-out madness.
And to kill the whole thing, I missed the finale of The Scholar!...
