The Doctor is still the same grumpy old man with the enthusiasm of youth, but now he more fully understands the danger he puts his companions in by simply being around them. It's a shocking realization to say the least and it leaves him feeling more than a little guilty. More importantly he has confronted his mortality. Although he lived it still leaves that lingering feeling over him that his time will someday be up. This isn't a horrible feeling, but it's also not something he wishes to ever face again.
Having spent a number of years, to him at least, pretending to be dead he's grown lonely and even a bit homesick. Yes, the TARDIS is his home, but in a strange way the companions he keeps with him help create that feeling of home. Without anyone by his side he feels, well, empty. Popping up on Amy and Rory's doorstep reminded him that he needs people. They remind him to feel real emotion like crying when you're happy. Such a strange human trait that he does so enjoy.
Being pulled back into the city won't anger or even frustrate him. He'll revel in being around humans and even if he's stuck living linear he's happy to have friends around.
