Sometime in 1938, over Earth, the Doctor is setting a ship up to explode. Unable to reach an escape in time he falls to Earth using every last second to climb into an impact suit that was also falling from the ship. He lands somewhere in England and is helped to the TARDIS by a mother named Madge. He thanks her for the help and tells her that should she ever need anything to just wish and he would appear. Three years later the war is on and her husband is reported lost over the English Channel. Not wanting to ruin Christmas for her children she decides to wait to tell them until after Christmas. Because of the bombing the family heads out to the county estate of an uncle. The house is deserted and the only person around is the Caretaker...who is really the Doctor.
He has set up an amazing Christmas surprise for the family, but the son Cyril opens the gift early and gets lost on a wintery planet full of living trees. The Doctor and the daughter, Lily, follow behind. Madge wakes and also follows the three, but is accosted by a trio of humans who tell her that the planet is about to be harvested for the trees and that acid rain will fall in five minutes.
The Doctor and Lily find Cyril in a building housing a Queen and King tree. They explain through Cyril that they are trying to escape and need a powerful life form; one more powerful than the Doctor. Meanwhile Madge had found the trio, but her only means to get to them is to drive the strange machine left behind by the harvesters. She crashes into the building and is reunited with the group. While hugging goes on the Queen tree sets up a halo around Madge's head and all the life forces of the trees enter Madge. As the acid rain begins to fall the top of the building takes off as it is a ship. The ship enters the Time Vortex and the trees tell the group that Madge needs only think of home to get back. She recalls her husband and family, but as she's remembering she begins to see her husband's final night. Crying out the ship crashes and Madge is faced with telling her children that their father is dead. Before she can the Doctor pops up and tells them to come outside. There they see their father walking from his plane which followed home a glowing light. The family is reunited just in time for Christmas.
Before the Doctor can take his leave Madge tells him that he should go see those friends who believe him dead as no one deserves to be alone on Christmas. Promising to do just that the Doctor pops up at the Pond home two years after having left them. Amy and Rory tell him they have a place setting for him as they always set a place for him and he smiles as he enters his friends' home for Christmas dinner.
