What a great reason, and you're so right. I'm really tired of seeing ignorance being published as The Truth.

We've been talking a lot in my household of late about Kenyan politics, actually, and why mainstream American media tends to underreport developing-world stories, so that line of your post made me laugh out loud.

As did this:

And honestly, the main reason is so that the next time it's 45 minutes to air and some producer calls me because they've changed the rundown again and they want to talk about Harry Potter slash but aren't sure what it is, exactly, and can I explain all of fandom in 1 minute, while standing on one foot, I can just say, "Hey, there's this web site you should read ..."

because I'm here going, does that make us Beit Hillel? *g*

Oh, don't get me started about all the claims of underreporting. I mean, the larger point isn't not true, but half the time someone will e-mail us that we haven't covered a story and it was our fucking lede -- and I'm like, "just because you weren't paying attention, doesn't mean we didn't cover it." The corollary to this is "Just because it wasn't in the NYT, doesn't mean the MSM didn't cover it."

And yes, the Hillel joke was for you. :)

We're starting to do Mishnah in our weekly group (we got bored with the parshah, and figured, what the heck, it's January) so Hillel and Shammai were on my mind anyway.

Hmm. Considering that fan fiction is often an extrapolation/enlargement of themes and characters found in the source text, using the same characters but filling in the explanation left out of the original, couldn't we call most midrash "fanfic"?

With apologies to Rashi...

Oh totally. kassrachel has a great icon, "Judaism is my other fandom." Being much less lazy than I am, she wrote a nice long piece about this: http://kassrachel.livejournal.com/544295.html

That is a great reason! Thank you for telling us that, because I totally didn't know you're a journalist.

Thanks. There are actually a lot of journalists who write fanfiction -- which makes sense when you think about the overlapping interest set.
