My Vagina's Country

So, in my flurry of not updating for the last... four months? Five? I obviously neglected to mention my triumphant return to the theatre. Note: the last word must be spoken with full snooty accent, and as if it is one syllable, piggybacked on a derisive sigh.

Yes, I have just performed on stage for the first time in... almost five years. I am part of the fabulous Queen's University cast of The Vagina Monologues, for which the first rehearsal was in January, and which has turned out awesomely.

Had I been updating all the way through the auditioning, rehearsal, memorization, dress run, pre-show jitters process, I would surely be able to give a more balanced and elaborate story of the work that's been put into this, the awesomeness of my co-players, how excited and scared I've been to put myself out there on the stage again and just... get back into it... but I came off the stage about an hour ago and I'm euphoric at the reception it's gotten, so the most I can say is "Wow."

Because, well, wow.

On a sad note, none of my family and few if any of my friends are here to see me in the show... my parents are in Barbados (which they planned well before they knew the dates of the show), my sister can't afford the gas (or the time) to drive out here and see me, my Toronto friends are also hindered by distance and money, and various sorts of scheduling unpleasantness has interfered with most of my friends in Kingston. Vic, for instance, is currently in New York, auditioning for the College Tournament of Jeopardy (everybody cross their fingers for her!). Other friends can't get the time off work, or have previous engagements of an unchangeable nature... anyway, the bottom line is, not a whole lot of people I know are coming to the show. At least, as far as I know... I may not be privy to the plans of everyone.

But the first show went wonderfully, and some women from the organization I volunteer at were there, which was great. I've got another show tonight at 8 and a third show tomorrow night, same time. This will actually be the first time I've performed a show more than once (as far as I recall), which is kind of nice... takes the pressure off, a bit, having three chances to put your best foot forward.

Ooh, downside to being back on the stage? I have a metric ton of makeup trowelled onto my face right now. Gaah.

Okay, I have but an hour to get something to eat and return to the theatre (that one you can read normally) for tonight's show. Ta, all!
