Goals for October '10:

- Practice Spanish 5 times a week. (By "practice," I have a workbook I have been slowly making my way through, as well as slowly trying to read/translate Harry Potter en espanol.) This is a big one for me, and one I've been working on off and on for years but am serious about now, especially because of a kid at school. He speaks hardly any English and should really be in an ESL class during most of the time he's in our classroom, but isn't because, due to budget cuts, our ESL teacher is only there half time. Yeah, I know, awesome. I have tried talking to him in broken Spanglish, and although he was really excited at first, now that I'm pressing him to actually do work, he's been brushing me off. But since I'm not confident enough in my language skills, I don't feel comfortable pushing him. We are reading Tuck Everlasting in Language Arts though, and as opposed to him sitting there bored out of his mind, I have ordered a copy of Tuck Para Siempre from Powell's and will give it to him on Monday. I don't know if he'll actually want it or read along, but, we'll see. Anyway, the end of the story is that if I want to speak Spanish well enough to put on my resume when I'm looking for real teaching jobs, I have to get into a regular routine with learning it.

- Learn the thing I have to learn for my brother's wedding, which is NEXT WEEKEND, HOLY CRAP WHERE DOES THE TIME GO. And I like, really have to learn this thing. Life has been insane. Goal: enjoy brother's wedding as much as humanly possible. Should not be difficult.

- In addition to still trying to not consume HFCS, start to also phase out anything with the phrase "partially hydrogenated" in the ingredients.

- GET A PART TIME JOB. I got a call back from a work study position at an office on campus I'd really love to be part of (the office of equity & diversity), but I was in class on Friday when they called and by the time I got out and called back they were out of the office for the weekend. But, it'd be great if that worked out. I need some, any source of income to survive, even if survive means living off of beans and pasta for the next year.

- Read 3 books for "fun." This is less than last month since I have tons of homework now. I feel pretty doubtful about even 3, though.

- Go on a hike.

- Go to a pumpkin festival.

- Buy plane tickets for Christmas.

- Enjoy as much time with Zoe as possible, who is all of a sudden visiting at the end of the month, and we're all going to see Sufjan Stevens together. What a surprise and what a dream!

- Update my photo blog at least 15 times; update Things Jill Likes at least five times.

- Make a greater effort to say "hi ___" to students by name EVERY time I see them, in the halls, on the way out of class, etc. I want them to know that I notice them.

- Start to develop an idea of what I want to do for my Worksample 1 for the winter.

- Keep up on my schoolwork.
