Two Things You Should Watch/Read:
1. Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol. This guy changed my sister's life, and now I finally understand why. An expose of public schools, and of the inherent racism/classicism in the educational system and the shocking conditions of schools in poor areas. If you are an American, you should read this book.
2. The Times of Harvey Milk, Academy Award Winner for Best Documentary, 1994. Harvey Milk served on San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in the late 1970s as an openly gay activist. Both he and the mayor were shot dead in City Hall, yet the murderer - who openly admitted he did it - only served five years in prison. This is somewhat of a huge thing in gay history - or really, should I say, history in general - yet I knew hardly anything about it until the documentary. After we finished watching it, we talked about history books and for kicks, I got out my A.P. U.S. History book from high school. There's one paragraph about gay rights.
