Romance Novel Recommendations

May 04, 2011 16:03

sonjamillicent asked for romance novel and review recommendations, so I'm compiling a list here. I'll probably update it as I find things, because I'm at work and don't have my 4GB (omg) folder of books on my work computer. Since I don't follow Romancelandia very much anymore, I don't have as many romance resources at my immediate disposal.

~books~

This is the big 170MB folder of gay fic and erotic romance novels (not all gay, btw) that I uploaded for gryffin_draco.

This is a ~10MB folder of Harlequins. This is a ~10MB folder of contemporary romance novels. This is a ~30MB folder of erotic romance novels. I honestly cannot remember what all is in these folders.

As I've said before, I'm not a big fan of fantasy or historical, so almost all of the romances I read are contemporary, and they're either hilarious or explicit, so that's what my recs are made of. I can only really give one good historical recommendation, and that's Julia Quinn.

Author recommendations:
  • Lauren Dane
  • Shiloh Walker
  • Megan Hart
  • Gail Carriger
  • Jennifer Crusie
  • Nancy Madore
  • Julia Quinn
  • Victoria Dahl
  • Portia Da Costa
  • JM Snyder
  • Chris Owen

    Imprint/Publisher recommendations:
  • Harlequin Spice (erotica)
  • Harlequin HQN
  • Harlequin Blaze
  • Harlequin Romance/Superromance
  • Samhain (hit or miss)
  • Ellora's Cave (really hit or miss)
  • Loose ID (hit or miss)
  • Avon Red
  • Kensington Brava

    ~blogs~

Smart Bitches Who Love Trashy Books was one of the first blogs I followed when I discovered that there was a world outside of fan fiction. It's still one of my favorites; Liz and I went to Des Moines a few years ago to get my Smart Bitches book signed. It features what has to be my favorite romance novel review in the history of the internet. One of my favorite tags is Covers Gone Wild, which is their criticism of really terrible cover art.

Dear Author is my second favorite. It's not as entertaining, but it's got a lot of really great discussions about feminism in romance novels, writing trends, and it's my go-to place for ebook info. I actually read this more than Smart Bitches, these days.

Wendy The Super Librarian has a lot of great reviews, written by a librarian. The Good, The Bad And The Unread does not believe in the Oxford Comma, but they review a ton of books.

I followed the Carina Press blog for a while, because I was interested in how Harlequin was handling an entirely-ebook press, but my expectations were too high, and it was a little disappointing. Same goes for Redlines and Deadlines, the blog for Ellora's Cave editors.

The best place to find reviews for anything would be Goodreads, which I am really bad at updating. :\

I used to follow author blogs, but let me tell you, internet, that is a mistake. I can't read novels by some of them anymore because I can't get past how batshit they are in their blogs.
  • read a book!, why can't i just be paid to read romance, download this shit, write a bad romance
