Repo! The Genetic Opera

I can never remember who all I've informed of things, but this merits a general announcement. There's a film that comes out next month (a month from today actually, Nov 7th), very limited release--only Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and New York City. This film is entitled Repo! The Genetic Opera (trailer) (official website), and is a rock opera set in a not-so-distant future in which mass industrialization has resulted in massive, widespread organ failure. A biotech company entitled GeneCo, led by CEO played by Paul Sorvino has risen to power with its abilities to transplant organs... at a cost. And if you fail to make your payments, GeneCo sends a Repo Man (played by Anthony Stewart Head) to reclaim its property. And in this dark, industrial society, people have become addicted to surgery, and a painkiller known as Zydrate (see one of the songs that has been released, Zydrate Anatomy).

Others in the movie include:
Sarah Brightman, a once-blind opera singer who has received fancy implants
Ogre from Skinny Puppy, a son of Paul Sorvino's character who wears women's faces because his is horribly disfigured
Paris Hilton, Sorvino's spoiled, drug-addicted daughter
Alexa Vega plays the 17-yr-old daughter of Anthony Head's character
Bill Moseley, another of Sorvino's kids, fighting over GeneCo

There have been lots of musicians to dip their hands into this project as well, anywhere from Joan Jett to the cellist from Rasputina.

Paul Sorvino has been quoted as saying that this is the best movie he's done in 25 years. Note that Goodfellas was 18 years ago, the fact of which he is well aware. The creators have said that their vision was some mix of Rocky Horror and Bladerunner, and I think they've done a good job of keeping that feel while making the music far superior to the former. I have every hope that this will become the next-generation Rocky Horror--less sexual, more violent, better music, but with the same "attend midnight showings all dressed up" feel.

I said earlier in the year that I thought WALL-E and Iron Man would go down as the best movies of the year by a fair margin. I retract that statement; those two may go down as the biggest movies of 2008, but I honestly think that Repo! The Genetic Opera will far outlive both, though as a cult classic instead of a major box office hit.

Anyway, this is 100% a word-of-mouth movie. Spread the word. Tell anyone you think might be even remotely interested.
