My yearly dog diatribe
Watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, as I do every year ... and as every year, the Standard Poodle wins the Non-Sporting Group.
Now, I have nothing against poodles. On the contrary, I've had very good experiences with them. Poodles are smart, friendly, trainable, and Standard Poodles are BAD ASS guard and hunting dogs. When we lived on English, our neighbor had two Standard Poodles, and the entire neighborhood was safer for it. (Especially Max, God give him rest.)
So seeing them dolled up like My Little Ponies drives me to distraction. And every year,they say that the poofs are to keep the joints warm and dry when when retrieving in the water. Fine. Why, then are you SHAVING EVERYTHING ELSE?!?! Poodles do not look like that naturally. They have a coarse ALL OVER waterproof coat (that, incidentally, doesn't shed). Why are you shaving half of it off?
Anyway, I'm pulling for the Basset in the Hound group, as always. And since we got Joey, I have to start backing the German Shepherd in the Herding Group.
FYI, both of my dogs were pound puppies.
