Storms and Bread

Last night's and this afternoon's Bible reading helped me put stuff into perspective.

I read the story of Peter sinking in the waves as he tried to reach Jesus on the waves (Matthew 14:22-33) and the story of the disciples worrying about having bread (Matthew 16:5-12). Both Peter and the disciples doubted the power of Jesus after He had memorably subdued the storm in the sea (Matthew 8:23-27) and fed the five thousand (Matthew 14:13-21).

Peter and the disciples experienced doubt that distracted them on two different planes: focusing on reaching Jesus and focusing on the message Jesus is trying to give them. I found this really interesting because I do the same thing all the time. I let everything that is happening around me fill me with doubt when Jesus has clearly provided for me in the past. God did not promise for everything to go smoothly, but He has promised me peace. I cannot realize this peace, which allows for me to hear the Spirit better, if I am constantly distracted.

Well, one exam down and two more to go! I have a pretty busy week ahead, and I am really excited to go home on Friday. Just a little more left to do!
