Questions to ponder about government:

Nov 24, 2010 05:05

I read up on the conflict between N. and S. Korea, including papers from the USA, China, an Islamic paper, Britain, and Germany. After reading so many different viewpoints in the comments (and hoping the extremists were similar to the extremists who write on you-tube and Yahoo news, and not the general populaces opinion), I wrote this to help me think.. it's not as polished as I'd like, but definitely something I'll want to think about again in future years.

Do all governments do things their population would not like? Such as imprisoning those who speak up with different ideas, killing innocents, putting the wrong person in jail, attacking the wrong building, having problem people "accidentally on purpose die in jail" etc.
People make mistakes... does your government own up when a person it employs makes one?
Or when in hindsight, a decision was not the best?
Does your government allow those who speak against it's decisions, but take no action against it?
Does your government protect it's people from other countries and from criminals inside the country?
Do your government officials do their duty without needing bribes or favors to do them?
Does your government keep it's word.
Does your government educate all of it's people to be literate?
Does your government allow it's people the freedom to move where they choose, the freedom to follow any religion that doesn't harm others physically or break it's countries laws, the freedom to speak their opinions, the freedom to have consensual sex (as long as both participants are adults and have the mental acuity to consent)?
Does your government treat men and women equally,
excepting when a woman is pregnant protecting her more and making sure she is fed?
Does your government punish criminals equally, and fairly, with understanding and justice?
Does your government allow the free exchange of information and ideas?

Not sure if others would have the same list, but these are things I'd love to see in my government.
