I was first introduced to him by a friend who thrust _Reaper Man_ at me. At the time, I declared it the best book I'd ever read. If you can believe it, I even had a reasonably intimate moment with a woman in college that involved a reference to that book. She had rather coarse, short, blond hair, and while leaning together and quietly running my fingers through it, I described the ending of Reaper Man and mentioned how her hair reminded me of the blowing fields of wheat.
