An Alternate Realm
We'd discovered another reality, one accessible through various nodes hidden through the world. Your physical body stayed in this reality whilst your consciousness went into the new one, in a new body. The main problem was that the nodes we'd found were all in shark infested waters (mostly in ruined cities abandoned to rising sea waters) The other problem was the other realm. Due to previous problems there I'd had to move our base over 1000km South. It was now nestled up against a giant set of rocks reaching out of the desert near a nice river town.
I quite liked this river town, and quickly made friends there. One day I was relaxing on a lounge chair by the river with a woman I liked, just chatting about stuff, and it was nice :) I wanted something so I went into the store just across the road but the store owner had to go out briefly and asked if I could watch over the store for her. I agreed since it wouldn't be long. It was mostly quiet till one of her regular customers came in wondering where she was. I told him that she was out only briefly and I was minding the store until then. Satisfied he went on with his shopping and brought it up. I found the price tags on everything and entered them in, he was buying clothes drying racks, eggs, mini prayer beads, and other strange items. I kept using the quantity button when there were multiple items, wondering if it worked. When everything was done it was obvious that the quantity button hadn't worked so I had to redo several items.
I kept popping back to our reality every now and then just to check on things. There were 2 of us by a phone booth, and a third person strung out a little. We were all on a line. I noticed a small shark, like a lemon shark or something nosing around the third person. I tried warning them that they had been noticed by sharks, but they didn't seem to care, it was like something more important was happening. I wondered what the shark was up to, it had found us, why hadn't it attacked yet.
We were at a conference table when I got back. Everybody was there, all of my team, the nice lady from the river front, everybody. It was obviously an important conference, and seemed to be going well, when suddenly the person who was strung out a little on my team went black with a 'no carrier' message. He'd been eaten. Very quickly I went black also as did the person speaking for our team. The sharks had made their move.
I reincarnated myself (my body had been eaten by sharks) and reinserted myself back into the other world, wondering about the nice lady I'd been chatting to on the river front. She was in hospital, her signal kept flickering in and out. She wasn't from this world either! I wonder which world she was from. I set off for the hospital. It was late at night now and traffic was annoying. I was chatting to her via a comms link but it was unstable. I passed an ice cream store and asked if she'd like some, but got no reply. I made it to the hospital, which was just set in a normal shop, and walked up to reception, and he spoke German *sigh* I spoke bad German back asking if he could speak English and he could, so I gave him my name and he started filling out forms.
