So, I survived August. A lot comes with that sentence. My apartment is finally liveable--I have all the major pieces of furniture assembled. My office has all the personal touches and is quite homey, my living room has pretty couches, an entertainment center, a nice dining room. I just need to get pictures to hang up and it'll be more home-like. It doesn't matter though; I spend all my time lesson-planning in the office anyway :p
And why is that? Because I'm officially a teacher now!!! The first few days were...disastrous, lol. I didn't have a working printer to print any of my lesson plans and felt really unprepared, then I was still working at Borders and...well, I was going on 4 hours of sleep and felt really stressed out. But Jon was really great about coming over and talking me back to sanity the first couple days, and I quit Borders, and I got a working printer--so now I'm good.
Well, not good. How about amazing? I love my kids. Adore them. Some of them are rowdy and smart-alecky (a.k.a. teenagers), but get them alone for a moment, and they're so polite and respectful...so not what I'm used to. Most of them actually want to be taught at this point, because the last guy didn't teach them a damn thing, and they're so smart. My freshmen are so sweet and are doing such a good job with symbolism, my juniors wrote their own myths, my seniors will like SOMETHING from British literature...I could go on. My coworkers are really friendly, the whole atmosphere is rather laid back. My classroom is beautiful. And I really feel like I'm making a difference there. And it's only been two weeks!
It has been a tough month: my friends have basically all moved away, my apartment makes me feel kind of isolated sometimes, and the planning gets stressful. But...I wake up every day and can't wait to see my kids. I wake up knowing I'm making society a bit better. I wake up knowing I'm not that bad at what I do. And two or three times a week, I also wake up knowing that I'll get to spend time with the most amazing guy, who is considerate and intelligent and makes me laugh and forget I was ever worried about anything in the first place. All things considered...I feel very fortunate to be living the life I am right now.
