Ianto flipped the final switch and the lights dimmed momentarily as the machine whirred to life. He let out a deep breath that he didn't know he had been holding, then slowly backed away and leaned against the grungy wall. Closing his eyes, he sank down the wall, slumped his shoulders and waited.

A few minutes or a few hours later, Lisa's voice woke him from his fitful slumber. "Ianto?"

He scrambled up clumsily and was holding her hand in an instant. "Lisa? Oh, Lisa, we did it. We're here. How do you feel?"

Her eyes skittered about, trying to see everything she could from her vantage point. "I'm fine," she finally answered, but Ianto knew she was lying. "Is this it? We're back at Torchwood?"

"In Cardiff, yes."

Lisa smiled. "You always promised you'd bring me here one day."

"This wasn't exactly what I had in mind."

"It isn't quite how you described it. I was hoping for that cottage in the countryside you promised me."

Ianto moved closer to her and brushed the back of his hand across her cheek, shuttering slightly at the odd combination of warm skin and cold metal. "What are you talking about? This is it -- our dream. Can't you tell?" He lowered his voice to a soothing whisper. "We're so far away from everything, all we can hear are the birds and rustle of wind-swept grass. We're in our bedroom, can't you see? We chose this small bed so we would always be close when we slept. And here's that quilt your grandmother gave us for the wedding, remember? And look, just there, those silly pink curtains with the yellow flowers and crooked hem that you insisted on making yourself.

"Then look. See beyond that? The green hillside just outside the window. We picnic out there in the summer and sled down it in the winter. Listen. Hear that? It's the brook, just on the other side. Our own private stream, and we make love there more often than in this bed."

Ianto tried to subtly wipe away his tears before he continued.

"And just a mile away, that stream opens up and gets wider and deeper and that's where we teach the children to swim. And later, much later, we watch our grandkids run over that hill and into our waiting arms and we give them lemonade and embarrass them with kisses.

"Can't you see, Lisa? We're here. We made it." Ianto forced his look from his fantasy back down to Lisa and saw she had fallen asleep again.

He kissed her gently on the lips and watched her for awhile longer. Eventually he let go of her hand and backed out of the dim, dirty room, locking it behind him. Securing inside his love, his future, and his own lies and broken promises.
