testimony to 9/11 commission

"I don't remember the al Qaeda cells being something that we were told we needed to do something about," said Rice.

Former Sen. Bob Kerrey asked Rice why the United States did not attack al Qaeda after the bombing of the USS Cole, and her statement that the president was "tired of swatting at flies."

"Can you tell me one example where the president swatted a fly when it came to al Qaeda prior to 9/11? ... We only swatted a fly once on the 20th of August 1998. We didn't swat any flies afterwards. How the hell could he be tired?"

Congress created the commission -- initially opposed by the Bush administration -- in November 2002 and charged it with coming up with an authoritative account of the 9/11 attacks, including any security and intelligence lapses.

The commission is also required to issue recommendations on how to protect against any future attacks.

The commission's report is due by July 26, but it may not be released at that time, subject first to a security review by the White House.

A presidential daily briefing entitled "Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside United States" issued August 6, 2001, was dismissed by Rice as a document dealing with history not dealing with "current threats". The document is still classified.

How anyone could just sit back and allow this shit to happen is beyond me. Rice said that she was never told that al-Qaeda was a threat to be considered upon entering office in 2000. The woman is the National Security Advisor. The irresponsibility is obvious and glaring. The Bush administration attempted to block testimony by National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, saying it would undermine executive privilidge and set a dangerous precedent for the future. They opposed the 9/11 commission at first. They started a war with no just cause. Marines in Iraq are being brutally killed. Four Americans were killed, burned, and dragged through the city of Fujallah, where Iraqis seethed with indignation and righteous anger. A Shi'ite cleric named al-Sadr is wanted on charges of murder, yet commands a dedicated militant following, and has vowed to fight any US forces to the death.

The US is set to hand over power to the Iraqi people at the end of June.

The faults of the current administration are everywhere. Yet, somehow, average American Joe Blow seems not to care. Just be prepared not to be surprised when another attack happens or your brother or uncle in Iraq comes home in a body bag.
