Cooking for Dummies

So I decided to try something new this evening and do some actual *gasp* cooking. Normally, the closest I get to that is reheating something in the oven or making a sandwich. On a lark the other day, I decided to pick up the stuff for something ever so slightly more complicated: a bacon cheeseburger. Yeah, I know, real complicated, right?

The good news is that I survived. The burger was even tasty. But there were a few speed bumps which will serve as learning experiences. Some of the things I've learned are listed below:

1) Pan-frying a burger patty is nowhere near as good as barbecuing it, and I shouldn't expect it to be. It also leaves a hell of a mess behind in the pan.
2) Turn on the fan *before* I start cooking.
3) Warm up the bun with a short burst in the microwave when everything else is done.
4) Buy thick-sliced bacon; this regular stuff is paper-thin after being cooked.
5) Speaking of bacon, need a different cooking strategy here. The first two slices carbonized rapidly as the tilt of the pan left them in a lot of grease. Had to throw them out, which was very sad.
6) Also, need tongs or something for turning the bacon, as a spatula just doesn't cut it.
7) Again with the bacon, need to get better about knowing when to turn them.

But! It was a learning experience, and I came out with an edible end result. Will have to try again another time.
