Imperfect beauty

I have 8 dinner plates to use everyday.  They are all hand painted, so no 2 are exactly alike, but even more so, I have only 2 of each of 4 patterns. Two have developed chips, but we still use them.  They are still very useful.   They fit well into my life.  I have a variety of coffee mugs.  Some are for everyday and some are for holidays like Christmas.  I have a wide variety of cereal bowls.  I think I could match up 2 sets of 2.  I am just more likely to have a hodge podge of a collection.  I might use them depending on how I am feeling at the moment.
I LOVE hand thrown pottery.  The colors seem to call me and I often pick blues and greens when I am buying, but some I have absolutely adored are the browns and reds.  But no 2 pieces are alike.
I just can't seem to buy one place setting X 8.  I just don't need to match each piece.  But also when buying as a gift I just don't like to add a goblet to a growing set of exactly the same glass.  Who remembers the giver of that gift?  I want to share something beautiful and often it is made by Don Dubois.
I also love memories sparked by things.  The depression glass plate from Dunk's Grandma Johnson.  Or the silver nut bowl from Grandma Dunbar.  Even to the rocking chair that my grandchildren know came from my Grandpa.
This is probably why I love beach glass, since each piece is individual.  This needing to have variety and diversity seems to be what I am all about.
One last thought.... I have a very large pour bowl from Dubois'.  It is beautiful grays and blues, with white.  As sometimes happens, it broke during the washing.  I haven't seen anything like it in the years since it lost a big piece.  Luckily I can still use it with the aid of super glue.  It is a favorite mixing bowl to this day.

memory, life
