Self Esteem

Definition:   the confidence in one’s own merit as an individual.
I guess this is a concept that my generation has screwed up, as we have done with other theories of parenting that appeared in the 70's & 80's.  If our kids didn't have high self esteem they wouldn't be successful in life, so we started to artificially enhance self esteem.  But it ( Read more... )

If you don't fail at something small when you are young and can recover relatively easily, I believe that you will be totally devastated by failure when you are older. There was a little story about education on Oprah I believe. They interviewed a girl who was valedictorian of her high school class from a small town in Kentucky. She was struggling in her pre-med classes in college. Instead of looking for a different area to study, she was thinking of just quitting and going home to work at the local factory. Well, for one she needs better counseling, but if she always had success and never failed before what an awful time to have to deal with your first failure.
