Rose was a very tired little girl. What a very odd
day it had been! Scary and happy all at the same time. She knew her daddy was coming to visit her that morning. Knew the way she always did -- that special feeling that she got whenever he was near. That little Voice in the back of her mind that sometimes reassured her when she was most alone and sad that her Daddy was safe and that he loved her, even if he couldn't come to visit, and would one day come to be with her forever. To bring her to a home that they could share together, as a family.
She knew that Daddy was coming to see her. Knew it and felt it in her heart. How excited she was! But some very bad men had come to the School. Very bad men. Most of the Sisters managed to hide the children before they got all the way inside, but two of the Sisters couldn't. And the men hurt them. Hit them and screamed at them and tried to get them to tell them a secret. And the secret was -- Rose! She couldn't let them hurt Sister Hannah and Sister Maria because of her! So she did the right thing. Even though it scared her. A lot. She left her little hidey hole and told the men who she was. And to stop hurting the Sisters!
But her Daddy saved her! Just like she knew he would. And his friends had come to help him! Oh, how wonderful they were. Why, if she hadn't been wide awake, she'd have thought it was a dream. They were angels! Or even better than angels. Because they had wings, like a dove and a butterfly. No, not together, silly! Bliss -- that was Daddy's very best friend -- had feathers and the kindest face! And the pretty lady -- the one with the amazing purple eyes who looked at Daddy with such love and concern -- had butterfly wings! And POOF! Just like that, they brought her and Daddy to this wonderful bright place, with light and warmth and pretty colors.
Sighing in her sleep, Rose rolled onto her back and then, very slowly, began to wake. Began to realize as her small eyes opened to the bright light of morning, that she had been dreaming. That she was still in her little bed in the dorm hall with the other 40 little girls who --
"OH!" she exclaimed and suddenly sat bolt upright in bed. A very large bed for such a little girl! A soft and comfortable bed with wonderfully carved posts on each corner and all her own. Thick with comfortable covers and bright colors, in a room she'd never seen before . . .
