Rose was so excited when she went to bed that she was absolutely certain she wouldn't sleep a wink! The wedding and the reception had been so wonderful! Aille was very pretty in her lacy white dress and sparkly blue butterfly wings and her daddy was so handsome in his suit! She didn't think she'd ever seen him so very happy before and that made Rose happy too. And then there was the party afterward with all of the guests in the main temple, and she got to see the Unicorn again and play with baby foxes (they were called kits; she knew that because she'd read it in a book once), and then best of all she got a brand new Granddaddy to go with her new step-Mommy!
Of course, in spite of all the excitement, Rose was so tired after the long day that the minute her head lay on the pillow she was instantly asleep. So tired, in fact, that she didn't even dream. At least, not that she remembered. The very next thing she knew, it was morning again! Bright, cheery sunlight streamed in through the bedroom window and shone in her eyes as if to say, "Wake up, Sleepy!"
Rose yawned and sat up. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes with her small fists. When she opened them again, the first thing they saw was a single white feather and a beautiful rose lying on the dresser where she'd carefully set them the night before.
Red and white. If you mixed the colors red and white together, they made pink! Rose knew that because she liked to paint. Her daddy had been asking her for weeks what color she'd like to paint her room -- her very own room that she didn't have to share with anyone! Not like the dormatory in the School. She hadn't been able to decide on a color, but now she knew! She wanted her room to be painted pink!
Rose bounced a bit on the bed. She couldn't wait for her Daddy and Aille to come back to the temple so she could tell them her decision. And then maybe they could start painting the room pink today! Or maybe tomorrow. Would they even be home today? She didn't know. Bliss said that they were off somewhere special to share their wedding night but Rose didn't know where that was or how long it would be before they came back.
Maybe she could start painting the room herself? She was a big girl and she knew how to use a paintbrush. Why, if she started painting the bedroom walls now, she could surprise Daddy and Aille when they got back!
Thrilled with her having made so important a decision, Rose bounced out of bed, dressed only in her little blue nightgown. Running barefoot across the cold floor, she hurried out of the room and down the path to the bathroom. Once inside, she rushed through her morning business just as fast as she could, then ran out again and through the garden in search of Samual, the head of the household staff. Surely he would know where she could find a bucket of pink paint . . .
