She managed to wait until she got home to really fall apart. She ignored her mother's questions about her whereabouts and tears as she took the stairs two at a time. While she was out, her door knob was replaced with one without a lock. She felt so exposed already it didn't even phase her.
When had everything gotten so bad? Wasn't it just last month when her only worry in the world was what she was going to wear to the Spring Formal and how she was going to ask Caleb to go? It was going to be her night. Now she didn't even want to go.
Bits and pieces of different conversations played in her head. People that young have no concept of love. Just get over it. Diva little bitch. He deserved better. It was all for her own good. She was lucky.
She didn't feel lucky. She didn't even feel like a good person anymore. Caleb hated her. Her parents were angry with her. She was appalled with herself for even considering leaving the country to sleep with a 21 year old. And more than all that she was sick with the idea of how weak she was. How one person had the power to break her like this. Was she really a bad person? She never thought so before but everyone couldn't be wrong.
Suddenly she was glad for her punishment. She wanted to hide from the world and didn't think she was up to anyone else yelling at her.
Of course, that was when her mom decided to walk in. The girl couldn't help it. Her body shook as she just waited for the woman that always seemed to have more bad things to say than anyone to really lay into her hammering that final nail into her coffin.
Instead Lauren crawled into her daughter's bed and just held her. She didn't yell. She didn't even speak. She just wrapped her arms around her little girl until she fell asleep.
