I had an appointment this morning at the VA so they could fit my hearing aids and finish the tuning. As soon as they were in I started hearing things I never remember hearing. I thought it was funny they asked me if I was ready to wear them, YES! If I am able to understand people again, If I will be able to carry on a conversation in a restaurant or anywhere the background din is above a whisper, will I be able to hear the turn signal in my car without someone having to tell me its still operating after a turn... YES!
After they tuned them and had me put them in, I started hearing everything. I heard the piece of paper as it fell to the floor, when I walked outside I heard the automatic doors open then close, I heard the birds, the flags fluttering in the wind, the clink of the metal clips holding the flags as they tinked against the poles. I actually heard the sound of the rubber tipped cane striking the ground as the older vet walked thirty feet in front of me. I am even hearing the sounds of my keys on the keyboard as I type this. SO many wondrous sounds, that I have missed for over 30+ years.
It will take a bit of time getting used to, especially hearing myself, and how I sound a bit tinny at times, but wonder of wonders, I can hear!
