As I'm browsing the news on my lunch break today, I see the headlines about the coup in Thailand, immediately thinking: hey, my friend B is in Bangkok. He's on the opposite side of the city from all the government offices, but still has an Internet connection. I looked him up on an antique online game we both play and had a little chat.
Apparently, the major American/Brittish news outlets are not being allowed to broadcast in Thailand right now, Thai news agencies have had their websites shut down, and there is very little information coming in or out. So he doesn't really know much more than we do right now -- the military has seized control and declared a state of emergency, also suspending the legislature and constitutional courts.
What I'm wondering is how long it's going to take them to shut down the Internet, too. Of course, to me, that would mean I'd lose contact with my friend. He's a good guy, though, and has the skillset to handle the situation, so I'm convinced he'll be okay. Right now, it doesn't seem like anyone is panic-stricken or doing anything rash. It's just get out of the way and wait and see what happens.
Here's to hoping it's for the best.
