we few, we happy few, we band of brothers - joined in the serious business of keeping our food, shelter, clothing and loved ones from combining with oxygen.
--kurt vonnegut.
i have been following from afar the news from the house of commons, and i have heard about the fire and subsequent closure, and the displacement of many of those dearest and most necessary to my heart.
i have always had a hard time wrapping my mind around the concept of 'home,' but i realized early on that it had more to do with 'who' than 'where.' i have no idea if anyone from the house will read this, but i love you all than more than many of you will ever know. with the downtime and the repairs, many of you--of us--will move on and will find places to stay elsewhere im sure, and the house will never be the same. the hoc improved exponentially over the time i stayed there and many of the people i consider closest to me i met while i was there. it became a community center of sorts, and a seat of power within the icc. it will be hard, if not impossible with everyone dispersed, to regain that along with the unique culture which accompanied it. austin may have lost one of its greatest assets.
i hope that you are all well, that is the most important thing. please stay in touch.
