Band Practice, Beer & Bourbon

May 01, 2009 00:26

And now for something completely different.

The start of another three day weekend. It's 7:50 pm. I have a beer and a bourbon nearby. Band practice was an hour ago. Tomorrow will be a busy day, a Friday of chores. Tonight I relax.

I have 3380 songs on my computer. That will seem a lot to some but I know people with 10,000. I have close to 300 CDs. Most have been copied to I-tunes. In addition to my CDs I've bought a few hundred songs online. My computer is a jukebox. I have no 8-Tracks, LPs, or cassettes. I explained in a distant post, I'm a purger. When CDs came in, the old formats were out.

I have a wire from the PC to my stereo. You can click on any song in 3380 and hear it throughout the house. We shoot pool with the jukebox playing. Or, I can sit at my desk writing in my blog, or surfing the net, and play music through my Skull Candy ear phones. Like I am this evening.

Sometimes I close my eyes, slide my mouse up and down the list and double click. The Wheel of Fortune Jukebox. I never know what the next song will be.

Tonight I'm carefully selecting my tunes, one song at a time, in no pattern except scrolling though my music playlist, which is alphabetic by artist.

As I blog at my desk this evening, these are the songs running through my ears, in my head, making molecules, nuerons and nerve endings happy. Music makes my whole body feel good.

John Lee Hooker / Decoration Day
John Hiatt / Down Home
The Motels / Only The Loney .......... a great New Wave recording
Muse / The Kinights of Cydonia
Neil Young / After the Gold Rush
The Ohio Players / Love Rollercoaster
Ozzy Osbourne / Crazy Train
Paul McCartney / Uncle Albert-Admiral Halsey
Peter Frampton / I Wanna Go To The Sun

As these songs pass by I'm writing a few things, a couple of emails, a blogpost and this evening soundtrack post. I have to flip between my drafts and I-Tunes, picking the next few songs in advance.

Pink Floyd /Us and Them
The Police / The Bed's Too Big Without You
Ray Charles / What'd I Say
Roy Orbison / In Dreams
Seal / A Prayer For The Dying .......the most soulful voice.
Steely Dan / Pretzel Logic
Tears for Fears / Everybody Wants To Rule The World ..........crank the volume.
Sonny Boy Williamson I / Shotgun Blues
Ziggly Marley & The Medoldy Makers / Look Who's Dancing

I've refreshened my drinks downstairs and checked in to see what Cheryl and Mikey are up to. She's watching a movie, he's sleeping on the sectional. When I spend time at my PC James makes himself scarce. There's a dance in this house. He moves around, room to room, to avoid us. Mikey follows me everywhere. We dance, canine, crazy, and me.

Aerosmith / Back In The Saddle .........saw them in 1976, and a few times more.
Bachman Turner Overdrive / Let It Ride
Bill Withers / Lean On Me
Billie Holiday / Fine And Mellow
Blood Sweat And Tears / Lucretia MacEvil
Bob Dylan / Rainy Day Women
Bob Marley / Keep On Movin'
The Doors / Cars Hiss By My Window
Elmore James / The Sky Is Crying
Frank Sinatra / One For My Baby
Gorillaz / Feel Good Inc.
The Guess Who / No Time ............my dad's influence

This is a lot of music. I've been at the PC for a couple of hours it seems but I haven't looked at the clock. Poof, it's 10:00 pm. Where has this night gone? The same thing happened last night. I did the unplanned double-feature, Unbreakable and Animal House. Before I knew it, it was midnight.

Janis Joplin / Ball and Chain
Junior Wells / In The Wee Hours ..... May be my favorite blues artist......in the dead league.
Keb Mo / Walk Back In
The Kinks / Sunny Afternoon
Led Zeppelin / The Rain Song .........Take a hit, sit back, and enjoy.
Muddy Waters / Mannish Boy
Nat King Cole / Get To Gettin'
Queen / You Take My Breath Away .......... Freddie Mercury's voice at it best.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers / Californication

Another refresh of beverage, I gave Mikey a biscuit, and I have that 'I don't have to get up for work tomorrow.', glow about me. Tomorrow I must prepare for a yard sale. Saturday at my place, stuff is up for grabs. From a 1997 Chevy Cavalier to my Ikea dishes. I might have a screwdriver or six to unload. So far, there's no nativity scene on the sales list. G.I. Jesus is still on a shelf. I hope some Mexican buys that fucking car. I know they'll buy Jesus if I can just get the son-of-a-bitch in the driveway.

Robert Johnson / Cross Road Blues ....... Crossroads has been done over and over by everyone.
Van Morrison / Tupelo Honey
Warren Zevon / Excitable Boy
Willie Dixon / I Can't Quit You Baby.......Yes, Zeppelin covered this.
ZZ Top / Waitin' For the Bus
ZZ Top / Jesus Just Left Chicago......one of the best hard drivin' blues-rock songs ever done.........it's 11:37.

I hate yard sales but they're a necessary evil. I have to watch people looking at my stuff, trying to buy it for a quarter, when I know it's worth far more, but I have no bargaining power, because the thing is in a box in my driveway. A yard sale tells each passerby, 'He doesn't want this shit......make an offer.'

You can't feel weaker than you are at your yard sale. Everyone is trampling your yard, pawing the crap you don't want. Normally, you wouldn't be having drinks with these people, but there I am, Starbucks in hand. You feel invaded.

AC/DC / Thunderstruck ............. There is no better song played at maximum volume.
Aerosmith / Uncle Salty
Asleep at the Wheel / Get Your Kicks On Route 66
The B-52's / Planet Claire ........Saw them three times, a fun show. Love the do's & this song.
B.B. King / Sweet Little Angel........It's midnight and I'm still rockin'......I should have carpel tunnel by now.

Making this list is funny because I could do this almost any day. My I-pod is on duty at work. One of the perks of Monkey-tech is.......it doesn't matter, I can wear my Nano all day. As long as I'm getting the job done, almost anything goes. We really don't have to go to work. I have a list like this in my head every time I plug in. I love technology.

I guess these last songs are the encore.

The Blues Brothers / Sweet Home Chicago
Bob Marley / Three Little Birds
Brian Setzer / Drive Like Lightening......... this guy is an entertainer. Great live with the full ochestra or rockabilly.
Chris Isaak / Blue Hotel ............. this guy is also an entertainer and great in concert.
The Commitments / In The Midnight Hour
David Bowie / Ziggy Stardust
Dire Straits / Tunnel of Love............12:30 am.......time for bed.

There I am Saturday, in a plastic chair, 95 degrees and a bunch of crap I once loved baking in the sun. As I scan the items of my life, things I bought years ago, because I must have them, look tacky, and I wonder, 'What the fuck was I thinking when I bought that ?'

I wonder if someone else is stupid enough to buy it. My price is a quarter.

music, drinking, band practice, up all night, blues, writing
