I’m about 98% sure I’m dumping Facebook.
The recent news stories on Cambridge Analytica’s use of Facebook to mine user data and drive fake news and propaganda in targeted states to sway the 2016 election is the last straw in what has been a long love-hate relationship with Facebook. I’ve had enough and I no longer care to be part of the FB community.
I watched Mark Zuckerberg on CNN last night addressing these issues and frankly, I don’t believe a word he says. That was a scripted performance, weak, vague and unconvincing. Whenever the Zuckerborg speaks I remind myself of one important fact; from the very origin of Facebook Zuckerberg has been a man without integrity.
He stole the concept of FB from Harvard classmates who enlisted him to write code for their ConnectU platform. Rather than deliver a finished product to the Winklevoss twins he registered the Facebook domain name and launched his own product which was a direct copy of their idea with his coding making it viable. How can you start as a fraud, a thief of intellectual property, and be trusted to operate that new, innovative technology and company with integrity?
You can't.
From the word go Zuckerberg was dishonest and I see no reason to trust him now. He cares about three things, money, his company and his phony image.
I posted my thoughts on quitting FB on my wall and got the responses I expected, because every Facebook user is in the same boat, including me. "This is how I keep in touch with my ... (fill in the blank)."
We've come to rely on Facebook to keep us connected. It's an amazing tool but that tool has been abused and misused by bad actors... including Mark Zuckerberg. Nine years ago he said this company would not give out the data of his users, but that's not what happened. They gave up our personal data, our likes, our habits and the info on what we do online for cash, because that's what these people do.
It's not news that Russians created fake accounts, posed as Americans and bombed Facebook with pro Trump ads and comments, I read the entire Mueller indictment of the 13 Russians. What they did was impressive and low IQ Americans fell for it. What troubles me is the fact Facebook seems powerless, or unwilling, to prevent it from happening in 2018 and 2020.
Zuckerberg traveled to Moscow in 2012 trying gain more access to that market. He met with Dmitry Medveded, Putin's right hand man, and attended an evemt called Hackathon. Who do you suppose he met there? They say he was recruiting users. Facebook doesn't need to recruit users, we offer ourselves.
The fact Zuckerberg met with Russian hackers before his platfrom was used by Russian hackers to attack our democracy does't sit well with me. When someone you don't trust does something suspicious your radar pings. What the fuck was Zuckerberg doing in Moscow?
Now we learn from Cambridge Analytica the Mercers, Bannon, Prince and other Trump operatives were neck deep in the hack and acquisition of 50 data on million Facebook users to direct their election influencing campaign on specific states and districts Trump needed to win.
I get that people rely on FB but I believe there are other tools and platforms we can use. Zuckerberg is counting on us to be lazy, look the other way and keep useing platform. They know that despite the fact so much of what's posted is fake news and the purveyors if this propaganda have stolen data ... people will just keep using Facebook.
I'm disgusted with Facebook and anyone who failed to protect our democratic process. Fuck you Mark Zuckerberg. You should be ashamed of the tool you've become, a tool of Putin.
I can't be part of it. I will pass contact info to Facebook friends interested in keeping in touch this weekend and will delete my account by the end of March. Those willing to make the extra effort to keep in touch will do so, others won't. That's the price I'll pay for not looking the other way.
