I'm looking forward to the World Cup final. I have my lawn to mow and swimming pool to clean but will certainly find time to watch the Netherlands vs Spain match. I have no team on the pitch but I would like to see the Dutch win.
I've watched a great deal of the cup tournament but in the latest rounds start times were pushed back making it difficult to watch live. I caught some on tape but mostly had to rely on highlight replays. I'm sure I've missed a great deal.
If one player impressed me most of all it would be Uruguay's Diego Forlan. Aside from his impressive skills Forlan has the leadership gene. I read an article about his personal life. He deserves a great deal of respect off the field as well as on.
When Forlan was 12 his older sister was paralyzed in a car wreck. Diego was close to Alejandra and vowed to work hard, become a soccer star, and support her for the rest of her life. He's made good on his promise. Form her wheelchair Alejandra Forlan operates a charity supporting physically handicapped accident victims.
I love sports but most of the time the contests are just another game, a form of entertainment I enjoy. I've always appreciated the human side of the story, the struggles and triumph many athletes experience away from the game.
Not being a long time fan of soccer I knew little of Forlan prior to this tournament. Now I can't help but wish Diego Forlan well in his career and life. I was hoping he would lead Uruguay to the final. It wasn't meant to be.
I can't predict if I'll watch a great deal of football after the cup. The MLS does not hold much interest for me. I did considerable reading on the English Premiere League clubs. My son watches EPL matches regularly. I catch some from time to time. It's best for me to have a team or players to identify with. I appreciate the game itself but do prefer having a rooting interest.
I like that football uses the term 'club' rather than team. It may sound silly, but I can never feel part of the team regardless of how many years I've been a fan of the Red Sox or Celtics. The 'team' is on the field ...... but I can feel part of a club. The term is inclusive to all sharing a passion for that organization.
One thing for certain, It's not likely I would jump on the bandwagon of the most popular and successful club. I'm not a frontrunner. I gravitate to the underdogs, especially the scrappy, hard working, blue collar teams. Man-U need not apply.
