I got back onto the Appalachian Trail today!! I hiked the destroyed mountains overlooking Palmerton, PA. The town's zinc smelting plants destroyed all of the vegetation on the moutain ridge in the early 1900's. I hiked up to Devil's Pulpit...named because its said the devil viewed the town with pride as it detroyed the mountains in search of a buck. That was long ago and the vegitation has been coming back nicely in many spots...some not so well though as the death of the veg allowed the topsoil that remained to be washed away.
Great hike, the devil notwithstanding. I ran into 4 sobo (southbound from Maine) thru-hikers . They were in good spririts and looking strong after being on the trail for two months and having hiked 900+ miles. I need to get my sorry, desk sittin', no hike doin', ice cream eatin', too much workin' ass back out there on a more regular basis!!
P.S. I am heading to Ireland on Saturday and I am completely pumped!!! I can't wait to get back amongst the Irish folks. No matter how bad I'm feeling as soon as I get to JFK and hear those awesome Irish accents from the passengers waiting on Aer Lingus to take them home my spirits are lifted.
