Tables He always felt the worst around the holidays. He had a family to go home to, children to give gifts to, a wife whom he loved to dote on. And she had no one to call her own. She went to her sister's and saw her nephew, a child that was almost hers. She went and saw her parents, he could only image how they looked at her when she wasn't looking. She should be married, with children of her own. Instead, she was a widow, a familial outcast in a sense.
He knew a few people at the Central Park precinct, people who owed him favors. And they, like all good policeman politicians, knew people who worked for the park and owed them favors. He decided it was finally time to cash one of those favors in.
He would not tell her where they were going, only that she would be blindfolded for the ride and walk, and that she should dress warmly, since they would be outside. It had started snowing that morning, which only made the trip feel more magical to him as he drove her to their destination.
The walk up the path was a slow one and she leaned heavily against him, trusting him to guide her. He had not steered her wrong yet, why would he start now. Every few steps, he would hug her to his side or kiss her hair, but he did not speak. He didn't trust himself to not give away the surprise. He was probably more excited than she was.
When they rounded the corner that brought the pavilion into sight, he stopped them. The Carousel was fully lit, despite the late hour. The weather and the fact that the attraction was not even open during the week in the winter guaranteed them that they were alone, save the operator. He pulled the blindfold from her eyes and stepped back a step.
The Carousel was lit and running, the music slightly deadened by the blanket of falling snow. But, whereas the snow softened the music, it intensified the lights. The colors reflected off white ground, brightening the area.
After a few moments, he encouraged her to approach, his hand on her back. The operator greeted them at the entry gate. Jimmy thanked him profusely, then helped Alex up. They made their way to one of the carriages and sat. She tucked herself against his side and pulled his arm around her.
They rode the Carousel for twenty minutes in that carriage, pressed against each other. Another ten minutes were spent on the horses, teasing each other. They took the opportunity to behave like teenagers, taunting each other about who had the biggest horse. When the ride finally came to a stop, he helped her down. They both thanked the operator again, wishing him happy holidays.
The walk back to the car was slower than the walk to the Carousel. They did not talk, they didn't need to. But they stopped often to kiss. When they finally reached where he had parked, the kiss was longer. It was to be the last time they saw each other before Christmas and the contact was bitter sweet. The drive back to One PP was done in silence, as was their parting in the garage.
As he backed out of the space next to her car, she waved and gave him a tender, happy smile. He would carry the memory of that look through the next two weeks, confident that he had given her the best present he could.
