hard drive help

so, we got an external hard drive and want to back up our computer files. it's proving to be way more confusing than it should be. shouldn't it just be a matter of dragging & dropping?

we have a macbook pro & a lacie 1 terrabyte hard drive, if it matters any. save my sanity, anyone?
