I really did adore the novels, but I think both stylistically and character-wise they hit my kinks (if one can be said to have literature kinks, lolol. But you know what I mean - it had a lot of things I really like in fiction in terms of plot, style and character. It just made me happy *g*).
In comparison I found the mini-series too 'compacted' (and I hadn't finished the novels then). It's was as though they took their time painstakingly laying out character stuff in the first two eps (not necessarily a bad thing), but then crammed all the actual plot into the rest, which didn't have enough space for it to breathe properly. The pacing felt completely off to me, and the fast-track development of the characters as they're affected by the events a bit dizzying. I probably will watch it again one day and understand it better, but I still it could have been compressed differently, perhaps.
I think Elementary could be great as a comedy - JLM/LL can definitely do comedy, and I do see a space in the market for a lighter, more screwball version of Holmes (which used to be Monk, although he's not really a Holmes clone, smarter brother notwithstanding *g*). But for the moment I'm happy just watching them :)
Edit: wow, typos galore...
