1. Amused for no particular reason to discover Sydney will be getting its own production of Nick Dear's Frankenstein. I'm not that keen, mainly because I've never heard of any of the cast - not always a bad thing, but I'm not sure the play is enough of a drawcard in and of itself. It looks like a completely new production, including original music ( Read more... )

I mean, I've seen warnings for nudity before; but this may be the first time I've seen warnings for...potentially unexpected covering. Surprise!

Interesting! Kind of weird, though. I don’t know if this is true or not, but I recently read that Australia has become more conservative when it comes to censorship of content that might be considered offensive-maybe it has to do with that?

Thanks very much for your thoughts on Parade’s End, both series and novels. I don’t know if I’ll ever get the time to read them, so it’s really interesting to see where they differ and where they’re the same.

Elementary has this weird quality for me: I’m not really loving it or anything, but I do look forward to it each week. I think it would be a very amusing comedy! :) And I’m going to watch them no matter what, but I don’t think I’d be watching it anymore if it weren’t, you know, Holmes and Watson. But it has definitely improved since the pilot, in my opinion, and become…warmer, almost? The pilot seemed kind of coldly mechanical to me, but the characters have become more human as the series has progressed. Hopefully it will continue!

It was just a very odd way of phrasing a warning, I thought (not that it was actually listed as a warning, but it sounds like one). Normally it'd be like: partial nudity (if that). Which makes me think it's a backhand reference to the NT production. I do think Australia has become more conservative in recent times, but nudity has never rated very high on our 'offense' list, so. It's more the phrasing that's odd.

I really did adore the novels, but I think both stylistically and character-wise they hit my kinks (if one can be said to have literature kinks, lolol. But you know what I mean - it had a lot of things I really like in fiction in terms of plot, style and character. It just made me happy *g*).

In comparison I found the mini-series too 'compacted' (and I hadn't finished the novels then). It's was as though they took their time painstakingly laying out character stuff in the first two eps (not necessarily a bad thing), but then crammed all the actual plot into the rest, which didn't have enough space for it to breathe properly. The pacing felt completely off to me, and the fast-track development of the characters as they're affected by the events a bit dizzying. I probably will watch it again one day and understand it better, but I still it could have been compressed differently, perhaps.

I think Elementary could be great as a comedy - JLM/LL can definitely do comedy, and I do see a space in the market for a lighter, more screwball version of Holmes (which used to be Monk, although he's not really a Holmes clone, smarter brother notwithstanding *g*). But for the moment I'm happy just watching them :)

Edit: wow, typos galore...
