I should be studying for an exam right now. Instead I'm procrastinating. Go, me.
Day 15: A videogame character who you can relate to the most
This one's the most difficult one I've had to answer, I think. Mostly because I play games featuring blue hedgehogs, purple dragons, aliens, and warriors with the weight of various worlds on their shoulders. Is there anything about that I'm supposed to relate to?
In the end, though, I decided on two:
and
I relate to Tails because he's shy but always nice, and has more potential to do what he loves than he knows (at least, I hope that's true for me); I relate to Madotsuki because she's a hermit (though my loner tendencies aren't quite as extreme as hers, I don't think) and would rather be left to her own devices than interact with people. Not that I don't like people, I do, just in small doses.
Day 16: A game that you used to love but now hate
"Hate" is kind of a strong word, wouldn't you say? I'm more...burned out on my choice than anything else.
Let me explain. I was obsessed with this game back in seventh (or was it eigth?) grade (for those of you who don't follow the American school system...thingie, I was twelve years old for seventh grade, and everyone else in seventh grade was around twelve/thirteen, too, if that helps). I made it my bitch. I mean, I made it my biznetch. I got everything needed for the secret footage at the end and beat most of the secret bosses and everything. Then came Kingdom Hearts 2, which I didn't make as much of a bitch or like as much, but still felt fairly satisfied on. After that, I guess I just...burned out on the series. I kind of lost interest in the PS2 release of Chain of Memories, and never really had any interest in 358/2 Days or Birth By Sleep.
TL;DR: I'VE MOVED ON. NEXT QUESTION.
Day 17: A game that disappointed you the most
There's a few that fit this category, so it's difficult for me to choose. This choice wins, but not by very much.
I'll admit, I've never actually played this one, myself. I watched someone else (my big stepsister. SURPRISE, SURPRISE) start a new game.
I guess disappointment is contagious, 'cause my little sister, me, and even my stepmom who didn't care for the series felt it, too. If you'll recall the first entry of this meme, I feel a huge attachment to the MR series, in general, and Monster Rancher 2 is my absolute favorite.
I don't know what the people at Tecmo were thinking when they made this game, maybe they were attempting a franchise reboot or something, I dunno, but I disliked this game from the very first moment. In each game, you get an assistant (always female, for some reason; the assistant from the first game, Holly, was the leading lady for the anime based off the series). Usually, they're pleasant and nice and very helpful. The one for Monster Rancher 3? Was NOT pleasant or nice. She was a rude, arrogant brat who expected you to give her the admiration and attention she thought she deserved. I thought she was annoying.
Obviously, an assistant isn't the end-all, be-all of this game; that would be the raising and fighting of the monsters (again; gratuitous animal violence FTW), which was still what this game was about. I could have dealt with a bratty assistant, the way I'm sure Aubrey could have.
But sweet Jesus, did they change this game. You see, in the other games, combining monsters (pretty much what it sounds like; fusing two different monsters into another one, which I'd try not to look too hard into, for reasons of DISTURBING) is pretty important in most of the series, so much so that they brought it back in Monster Rancher 4. In this game, you can't do that; instead, whatever monster you get changes according to whatever territory you're raising them in.
That's another issue, right there; you don't get one bit of territory, you get ranches in all sorts of different terrains. While it's an interesting concept, it felt sort of out of place in THIS particular series. The focus of the other games on home console is the monsters themselves; that doesn't seem to be the case here.
On top of all that, about a third of the species in the first two games were replaced by new ones. Again, not a bad thing, but it still gets brownie points taken off for it.
Also, the animation was okay, but it was a lot more cartoon-y than in the other games. Which is weird, because it was the first of the series to be released on PS2, so shouldn't that mean that it looks better than the games for the PS1?
That's probably just me whining, though.
