After he'd left the morgue that night and made it home, made it through the messages on his machine, and he hit the one from Renee and paused. Debated. Grabbed his phone, dialed her home number, and stood in front of the windows of his apartment to look at the city below.
He wasn't sure why he was calling her, but he wasn't about to bother Jordan at the moment, not after what was going on with Woody. A sigh as he heard her pick up.
"I've been better." He commented dryly, rubbing the back of his neck as he watched the lights flicker below. "I figured I might as well tell you what's up before you hear it at work tomorrow. Prepare you for...damage control."
"Not as fast as you might think." He said quietly. "I gave him the evidence. I didn't destroy it, I covered it, and I gave it to him. We got justice for her."
But you could lose everything. You probably will lose everything.
"Like I told Jordan. What good am I to these people if I can't do the right thing myself, set an example." He swallowed hard, before a nervous laugh. "I know I'm done for, I shouldn't kid myself. There's no chance in hell."
"And you have set an example." She sighed. "You don't know that. You can't possibly. Hiding evidence isn't the worst you could have done, and you aren't the only one who's done it."
"Yeah I know." He said quietly. "I just...I had to do it. It's a long story but now that I know it's gonna bite me in the ass, I would go back and do it all the same." A pause. "Jordan's all pissed with me still, I think, she seems okay but I know I disappointed her, then with Woody being in the hospital...it's all gone to hell. That man is a curse."
"Hm, well, going back and doing the same thing probably wouldn't do you a world of good." She didn't say anything for a minute, trying to think of a way to say it more delicately. "I think you dissapointed a lot of people." Including me, mr. high and mighty. "How's he doing?"
"There's nothing certain. They're flying in a neurologist from New York, he's supposed to be the best..." A sigh. "It wouldn't. But I was forced to do it, I couldn't risk my job with Abby just being born...fuck I don't know. I'm screwed. I apologize for any future uprisings my staff...the staff at the morgue may hold."
"They're still your staff Garret, and you know that. Even if you lose your job..." She sighed. "They're loyal people. You guys are like family. I don't think a single one of them will let that slip away. No Matter What."
He was quiet for a minute then. "Yeah. We are. Just now, standing here and realizing that tomorrow I'm not gonna go back to work, the day after that I'm not gonna go back, there's a chance I could never go back. I could lose my license...fuck I heard him mentioning possibility of prison time. It pisses me off how stupid I was. I thought I was done with that when I closed the envelope on my original autopsy report."
He wasn't sure why he was calling her, but he wasn't about to bother Jordan at the moment, not after what was going on with Woody. A sigh as he heard her pick up.
"Hey Renee. I know it's late..."

"It's not that late. How're you doing?" She asked quietly.
