Honestly, I wasn't aware until now that Boomer was a man in the original series. I know so little about his part in the original canon that I can't say for certain. (Starbuck and Apollo were comrades in the original canon, best friends, so making Starbuck a woman in the new series changed the dynamic of the relationship. I don't know whether any relationship changes occurred because of the switch with Boomer.)
Boomer's role in the new series, however, is the Cylon who chooses to be human. She is the first Cylon to choose to live among humans as though no difference exists between them. She has a miracle child with Helo, a little girl named Hera, who becomes the Mitochondrial Eve.

[EDIT: I should note, with reference to Starbuck, that prior to her romance with Lee, she was his brother's (Zak) instructor in basic flight. She was also Zak's girl friend. She passes Zak because she's hooking up with him, but he's a hack who gets himself blown to pieces. There is ~angst~ there that doesn't exist in the original series because of that.]
If you ever get a chance, watch the original BSG miniseries. It's the FUNNIEST thing ever. It's so bad it hurts deep inside. Plus disco dancing!
P.S. I'm just going to say that I LOVE Kara and while I can see Sheldon arguing that she's only there for the sexings, he'd eventually have to acknowledge her BAMFyness (is that even close to a word). Hello, Arrow of Athena! Hello, Caprica Rescue! Hello, blowing up the resurrection ship and then going off to assassinate Cain (even it's didn't happen)! Hello, every dogfight in space!
