Judge him, Jackie!

In series 1, there was meant to be a different episode. One that RTD purportedly axed. In it Jack finds out that the Doctor manipulated Rose's entire life to create the perfect companion for him ( Read more... )

It's interesting that you mention this, as I was just thinking about this the other day - but in relation to Eleven and River. Because, basically that's what happened, right? And it's like he's tacitly accepting that her entire life was meant to be about being obsessed with him, and killing him by not rewriting it (and he said her "time can be rewritten" so it's clearly a possibility). I think their relationship is fairly Frankenstein-ish and all kinds of disturbing, so, there ya go =P

I think RTD's call was the best one - I think it would have been squicky in the extreme, and no, I don't think it would have ever recovered. There was already quite a power dynamic imbalance between the two of them - I think this would basically have made her nothing more than a pawn, a piece of clay to his Pygmalion as it were.

I was just thinking this as soon as I hit the "send" button on my comment down there. It *is* very much Eleven and River, in some ways, isn't it? Eek.

Heh, it's distinctly Eleven/River, you could actually see this kind of story being written in s5/6 in regards to those two.

Totally ... I am completely mystified why he chose to take her story in that direction. It's even turned some River fans and shippers off her. Why would he do that to his own characters? That's just such a completely out-of-touch bungle that I just can't even comprehend his motivation.

It really doesn't make sense. I mean it was bad enough when he was doing that to everyone else's characters, but his own? Really doesn't seem logical. (Mind you, coming from a guy who once said "There’s no need for character development, or chat, it’s straight into: ‘There’s something wrong here, let’s look into this deep, dark hole.’” in regard to Doctor Who, are we surprised?)

But back on topic :P If they'd made this episode I think I'd probably like the Doctor/River relationship more, which given my dislike of it, is worrying.

IKR? To me, it either indicates that he's incredibly out of touch, or that he's purposefully doing this for some unfathomable reason. Given his comments/interviews etc, I highly suspect it's the former =/

Gotta agree with you there, since to say he was doing this for some unfathomable reason suggests he has a plan and I've never once gotten that impression.

Agreed. He alternately says that he has one, and then that he never thinks too far ahead ... I think the latter is probably most accurate. Either way, it's executed poorly.

Maybe he thinks contradiction = mystery? But yes, whatever he's going for, I just can't figure how he thinks it's working.

Some people find a lot of things romantic that others are generally kind of like this to, upon reflection:

lmao Time Traveller's Wife, if I recall correctly, inspired GITF (and obviously later River), and then in Audrey Niffenegger's next book she has one of her characters watch Girl in the Fireplace, and basically it's like one big time loop of little girls lirl

For real?? LOL too perfect... albeit in a very twisted way. Brainwashing little girls will NEVER be romantic. Is it me or is it becoming more and more common? We've got GITF, Time Traveller's Wife, Amy AND River... who nicely parallel Bella and Renesmee from Twilight, come to think of it.

Ick.

And that's why if they made this episode it would have been a disaster, adding Rose into that collection.

It's a disturbing trend. Really. There shouldn't be a romantic attraction towards a girl they knew as a child. Creepy.
