So, in the second edition of my school paper I wrote this:
Crossing the Line: United
States of Hypocrisy
America is like the stuck
up, prude from the church social, who claims to be a “liberated feminist.”
Whenever I hear someone say something like, “America is the freest country in
the word, and that’s why the terrorists hate us…” I want to scream.
America, while freer then a lot
of countries, is by far not the freest. If the terrorists attacked countries
based solely on how free they are then The Netherlands would have been blown
off the face of the map by now, and Switzerland wouldn’t be to far behind them.
Next to right wing, fundamentalist, Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia and
Iran; America is the most sex-a-phobic country on the face of the planet.
In this country, the so-called
“land of the free,” two men, or two women, who love each other very deeply,
aren’t FREE to marry the person they love. Why? Because it might make other
people uncomfortable? Who cares if it makes other people uncomfortable? I feel
uncomfortable about kids who are 18 or 19 years old, who throw their lives away
by getting married and have kids right out of high school, but I don’t think
there should be a law to stop it.
Almost two years ago there was
the famous Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction” involving Janette Jackson. Now
stations fear to show the slightest thing that may be considered sexual,
because the FCC will fine them. And this isn’t going to be limited to the
network channels, which receive government funding, but to the cable and
satellite stations that receive no government funding whatsoever.
So what it’s coming down to is
the government telling us that we aren’t FREE to watch something, that we go
out of our way to see by having to pay extra for it, because some people find
it offensive. Well, I find those people offensive; if they don’t want to get
offended then they should change the channel, because they are FREE to do just
that.
If you want any idea just how
sex-a-phobic this country is just look at the Justice Department’s top
priority. In Miami, a FBI supervisor met with interim US Attorney Alex Acosta
to find out the top law enforcement priority for the Department of Justice.
Expecting to hear something like terrorism, drugs or illegal immigration he was
shocked at the answer… pornography. And not child pornography, but pornography
made with consenting adults and sold to consenting adults. What this tells me
is that the George Bush administration thinks that a porno tape is more
dangerous then a terrorist with a U-Haul full of ammonium nitrate, diesel fuel,
and a match.
The first amendment gives us the
right to peacefully assemble and to protest our government for their actions,
yet when we do we get harassed and beat by the police. We get thrown to the
ground and kicked and punched for doing something for which our founding
fathers were praised for. We get tear gassed, and arrested for no reason but
practicing our first amendment rights. My mom gets struck with a bike by an
armed cop in Portland, leaving a bruise on her, and they say that she assaulted
him? That is not freedom, that is a police state.
So the next time you hear someone
say how “free” we are, ask them why is it that gay and lesbian couples aren’t
FREE to get married? Or why is it that I’m not FREE to watch and listen to
whatever I want in the freedom of my own home? Why is it that the police harass
us for protesting our governments’ illegal actions, and nothing is done to stop
them?
Being able to buy the latest fashion brand is not
freedom. Being able to vote on people who listen more to the multi-national
corporations then they do us is not freedom. And walking into a Wal-Mart and
buying something made by 8 year-olds in Indonesia is not freedom. So, before we
start bombing other countries into “freedom,” maybe we should try to find it
here.
Now when I wrote this and put in the paper I thought that I may get a
few angry responses. United States of Hypocrisy, America being a
stuck up prude, ect... but last week I recieved this letter. now of all
the things I expected, this was not one of them. when I first read it I
thought that it was someones idea of a joke , or even sarcasim, but
according to the teacher (she had aparently talked to him about it when
he turned it in) he was VERY serious. this is what he had to say (this
is word for word what he wrote, I havn't changed a single letter, except my name):
To the editor ***** *******,
I read your article
titled United States of hypocrisy; I don’t want anything to do with you for
writing on this topic because the only thing you were trying to say is that
gays and lesbians should be free to get married.
I think you
should lose your job as editor for writing on this topic. It doesn’t matter if
you have good writing skills.
I’m glad that
the Bush administration pays more attention to people who make pornography
because pornography is the reason people turn gay. Porn is made to look nice,
so if you watch movies or look at photos of nude people those pictures stay in
your mind; when you actually try to have a man woman relationship it doesn’t
work out because it doesn’t feel right. After that people start looking for
love from the same sex which is wrong and you’ll go to hell for it.
Its better if
you get married at 18 or 19 then you actually have a clean life, have kids and
raise them. Try to say you can have kids with the same sex; the only way you
Can do that is by adopting which is not having kids. The kids have to be your
own flesh and blood something that can only be made between a man and a woman.
The only way you throw your life away is by “falling deeply in love” with the
same sex because you’ll go to hell. If you say you’re a Christian you’re lying
because nowhere in the bible does it say to marry the same sex. If it says that
in your bible that means you added to it which won’t get you eternal life.
I have nothing more to say to your, only that I hope
you lose your job.
before I could read the name she had ripped it off so I have no clue as
to who wrote it. I wanted to put it in the school paper and publish it,
but they (Teacher and Editor-in-Chief) won't allow it. I think that
more of this stuff should be seen by rational thinking people to show
how crazy that these right-wing nutjobs really are.
xXx
PEACE!
