She'd begged him once after Wash's death to lie to her. To tell her she would be whole again. Or if he couldn’t, to say a prayer for her husband.
He'd refused. Said that words couldn't make anyone feel better, least of all her.
A far cry from the times he'd place a strong hand on her shoulder and believe the lie. Like in the war, when he would recite chapter and verse, Psalm and Proverb, because it comforted not only his soldiers, but himself as well.
All the Biblical verse she knew was from him - words poured out in benediction, in rejoicing.

Every time Mal and Inara fought, Wash and Zoe had to deal with the fallout.
The captain would come barging into the cockpit, snarling about bu hui hen de pofu, and disrupting their private time. And cheering him up? Well that required a lot of nearly getting shot on jobs and bruise-inducing sparring in the cargo bay.
Inara, though, tended to shut herself up in her shuttle and cry to Wash for hours over the comm system. He’d said it was like listening to the Londinium opera, only there was less high notes and more sniffling. Same amount of wailing, though.
By the time Wash and Zoe fell into bed, all they could really do was trade horror stories. And then it would just start all over again.

He’d been told by Tracey and Bendis when he first took command that one didn’t fuck with Corporal Alleyne.
So he figured upon meeting a stick-up-his-pigu type of guy.
Been shocked out of his skin when this gorgeous (yeah, even under the blood and dirt) woman smacked them both upside their heads and smiled as told him not to believe everything he heard.
He hadn’t, and she’d paid him back in spades for his respect.
Kept him sane when everything in the ‘verse was getting shot to hell. Shared an Alliance jail cell with him. Knew exactly why he’d named his ship Serenity.
And knew that if they just kept flying, they’d be alright.

He’d barely scratched the surface. Just roughed the man up a little, and damn near given his henchman a heart attack - see how he liked it.
But Zoe knew. Knew just what he looked like laughing over the shredded body of an Alliance spy. Heard him draw out the torture for days when the dumb hwoon dahn just wouldn’t talk.
Knew, and still came back for him.
