With the title “One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing”, there was really only one way the theme to Saturday's Shenanigans club could go. Admittedly, there were considerably fewer cavemen and women than expected, but we did have a dinosaur on the door for a while. Although we only had the top two floors, it worked pretty well - the sofas had all been moved down to the middle floor, so there was a decent-sized dancefloor, and repeater speakers on the floor with the seating meant that people could tell what was playing upstairs (and make the traditional dash for the stairway during the opening bars). We even had an unexpected barman at the upstairs bar, which saved on stair congestion.
A couple of early technical hitches may have been down to iffy CD burns and temperamental decks, but everything settled down later, though the PA could still have done with a few more Watts, resulting in a certain amount of mixer-tweaking to try to pull as much out of it as possible.
I played the final 1am-2am set, following Judder's Lee Chaos, starting off thematic, and then heading off to some of the edges of my music collection.
0100-0200
Was (Not Was) - Walk The Dinosaur
Killing Joke - Asteroid
REM - It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
The Prodigy - Diesel Power
The Young Gods - Gasoline Man
Marilyn Manson - The Beautiful People
PitchShifter - As Seen On TV
Filter & The Crystal Method - (Can't You) Trip Like I Do
VNV Nation - Nemesis
The King Blues - The Streets Are Ours
Pop Will Eat Itself - Ich Bin Ein Auslander
Senser - Resistance Now
Anthrax & Public Enemy - Bring The Noise
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
Aqua - Barbie Girl
The Ruts - Babylon Is Burning
Babylon Is Burning was a surprise late addition to the end of the set due to a discrepancy between the barman's watch and the clock I was running off requiring a rapidly-grabbed short track.
The next Shenanigans will be Shenanigans: The Non-Euclidean Nightmare on October 26th at Canal 125, when we will have an album launch party for CTRL+ALT+DEL, and will be opening at 8pm rather than 9pm.
(Also, I'll be DJing at the Memepunks double-set gig on 28th September at Rattlesnake of Angel.)
