Today I woke up at 8. The sun was up in the sky, and I didn’t have class until 10. A few days ago, my computer stopped working. So, I played my guitar. Mornings suck, but I can’t think of a better way to start one than to roll out of bed and just play guitar until the drowsiness goes away. When I stepped outside, I felt a cold sensation cut through the holes in the my right shoe, and a surprisingly not-cold sensation on my face. All at once I realized, that was water I was stepping in, and the sky was blue with wispy white clouds, no rain in sight! I think I said out loud “whoa”. Weather this warm was a thing of the distant past; a nostalgic memory. I felt the wind start to blow, and for a second I felt myself returning to reality: “haha, you idiot, it only feels warm because the wind hadn’t hit you yet!” But instead, the gently cool breeze lifted me out of this world. That Santana song from 1972, Song of the Wind, must have been written for a day like this. I couldn't stop smiling, even when I looked on the faces of others only to see the same emotionless facade I see every day. Only yesterday the wind was biting, and the ground was covered with billows of snow up to your shins. Today, the snow has turned into little rivers of water glistening in the sun, and the gnarled brown trees look alive again next to the backdrop of green grass, even without leaves. Still, I have to say I’m partial to the pure, bright blue of the sky and the thin, windswept clouds. Has the spring thaw begun?
